Q. So do you have to marry an Indian man then?

Yes

Q. What if you were to fall in love with a white man?

I mean, I’m not necessarily attracted to white men all that much, in terms of thinking of them with a long-term perspective. When I see white men, I don’t even think of them that way, so it’s sort of been wired into my system that I am not to look at a white man that way. Obviously, for shenanigans, ethnicity is not important.

Q. But what if you had a white colleague and you really hit it off and you just fell madly in love with each other? What then?

Then I would be paving the way for a lot of family drama. My parents can be persuaded but it won’t be pleasant, and frankly, the amount of effort alone makes me not want to ever think of a white man that way. For shenanigan purposes I’d be happy with a white man but never for something serious.

Q. So you’d have to marry a Hindu man then?

No, I’m Sikh. The preference would be Sikh.

Q. What’s the difference between Hindu and Sikh? Aren’t they the same?

They’re as same as Christianity and Judaism are the same.

Q. So you can’t marry a Hindu?

I can, but it would be their second preference.

Q. Can you choose your own husband? Like, can you date someone and introduce them to your parents?

Yes.

Q. Then why don’t you just find someone?

Because I don’t want a husband right now; doesn’t matter where he comes from, me or my parents.

Q. What happens if you don’t marry?

Family arguments, drama, yelling.

Q. I find it so strange that you have to go through this!
